The Green Cellular concept relies on the power control mechanism which is a fundamental concept in modern cellular systems. In general, when a cellular device is received with good quality, the system instructs it to lower the transmit power. Likewise, when the device is being received with poor quality (when there are errors in the decoding process), the system instructs the device to increase the transmit power. The instructions to increase or decrease the user device's transmit power are generated by the uplink power control mechanism.
Cellular technologies endowed with uplink power control mechanisms enable a significant reduction in the cellular device's transmit power, when the device is in proximity of a Green Antenna.
3G & 4G cellular technologies, such as WCDMA (UMTS), CDMA2000, WiMAX & LTE*, support sophisticated and fast uplink power control mechanisms, making them perfectly suited for augmentation with Green Antennas. 2G technologies, such as GSM and iDEN, endowed with less sophisticated power control mechanisms, will also allow for a decrease in radiation, though not as drastic.

*LTE is a trade mark of ETSI
